Stressing Over Grade 12 Courses

School starts soon for me and I was thinking about dropping Chemistry for another course as I’m not strong in the sciences. I chose 12U Chemistry last year for course selections thinking that I would go into Nursing, But now I feel that I want to go into teaching as I’m very good with kids and its something I wanted to do as a child. 

My courses as of right now are:

Semester 1: 
Health and Nutrition
Grade 11 Chem 
Data Management

Semester 2:
Challenge and change
Grade 12 Chemistry 

p.s: I didn’t take Chemistry 11 last year that’s why I was supposed to take it this year.

 I really wanted to take out both chemistry courses and change Chemistry 11 with possibly a university or mixed course and change Chemistry 12 to a spare, do you think it’s too late to do so if I talk to my counselor about it? What should I do?

  1. You would have never survived a nursing program (or any STEM program) if you're not strong in sciences. And more importantly, patients deserve a highly competent nurse, as they see you more than they do a doctor. It's the first week of school, so I don't know why you think it'll be too late to drop chemistry. I would definitely do it if you're not strong in sciences. Pursuing a science degree in university is absolutely foolish if you're not that good in basic high school science material. 
    Now, coming to the "working with children" part of your post. Narrow down your goals. Do you want to become a teacher? In what subjects? Are you aware of the job market for teachers? I know people who came out of teacher's college 5 years ago who still don't have full-time positions. A lot of people I know left the country to teach English in Asia, or moved to very rural areas to focus on Aboriginal education and marginalized populations. If you plan on teaching social sciences in a populated, metropolitan area, then know that you will struggle to find a job out of teacher's college and it may take you years out to really land a position (you'll likely have a ton of contract, supply teaching positions).
