Nursing Hopefuls 2020!

Hey fellow prospecting nursing students! Lets continue last years 2019 nursing hopefuls thread 🙂 This thread can be used for questions, concerns, advice, admission averages, and current nursing students input. Here are some questions to consider: -What schools are you thinking of applying to/ have been accepted to -Anticipated average. -Thoughts on the CASPer exam -End goal for your career I’m thinking of applying to Trent, Mac, Western, Fanshaw & Ottawa for nursing and Laurier and Waterloo for kin (backup/plan B). Hopefully my average will be between %88(lowest) and %92 (highest). Relying on a strong casper for Mac. I’m a little worried as my average is on the lower side for nursing. Thanks!

  1. I’m planning on applying to Ryerson (and collabs), Seneca/York, Humber, and UOIT. I’m a 105 applicant who has been out of high school for 10+ years. I didn’t take any university prep courses in high school so I’m taking the prerequisites now and it’s going pretty well. My biggest worry is that I have a couple of failed courses from a semester of college I took 5 years ago. I missed the withdrawal date and I stopped showing up… a stupid mistake. I’m trying not to worry too much about that though.

  2. Planning on applying to mac, queens, brock, western, and uoit. Hoping for at least a 88% average. I did english in summer school and ended off with a 94% which was not as high as i wanted it to be. Since most universities only require one math I am only taking Data Management

  3. Hey everyone!
    I am planning on applying to Ryerson main site, GBC- Ryerson collab, McMatsters, Mohawk-McMasters collab and maybe uOttawa. I’m really nervous about the casper. I’ve already taken five grade 12 courses (Chem, Bio, Families, Adv Functions, Calculus). I was wondering if they would still look at my grade 11 marks for early admission? Or considering that I have most of the program reqs done, would they just look at my grade 12 marks? Fingers crossed they consider my gr 11 marks.

  4. Hey guys! I’m currently in first year at McMaster so if you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them! 🙂

    • Hey! So a have a couple questions:
      1. If you are comfortable sharing, what was your grade 12 average (top 6)
      2. What schools did you apply to / get accepted to
      3. What made you choose Mac
      4. I know it might be too early for you to answer this but, I hear a lot about problem based learning at Macs nursing program. I just wanted insight on what exactly it is and if you like that learning style so far.
      5. How was the CASPER test? I’m really freaked out about it .

      • Hey! And it’s okay I don’t mind answering any questions I know last year I asked tons of people personal question lol.
        1. After second semester midterm marks were out (which is what you get accepted with), my average was 92.5

        2. I applied to so many schools, like almost every single one in Ontario (I don’t know what I was thinking). So I applied to Mac, Western, Queens, Laurentian, Trent, OUIT, Nipissing, Ottawa, Brock and Ryerson. I got accepted to all of them except waitlisted at Queens and got an alternate offer.

        3. Choosing Mac for me honestly came out of nowhere. I toured it in the summer between grade 11 and 12 and absolutely loved it except I talked to an admissions rep and they told me it’s super hard to get into Mac and that scared me. My grade 12 chemistry teacher also kinda scared me off of Mac too. But then in April I just randomly started researching so much about Mac and the nursing program and literally fell in love. I went to May @ Mac and was so happy with it then too. I also love the community here it’s amazing. I’ve made so many great friends and the resources here are amazing, especially in nursing. We’re like the only school who has Welcome Week. Most schools have a few orientation days during the first few days of school but we have a full on week at the end of summer and it’s amazing. Our program is small too which is nice and it’s nice they used CASPER so it wasn’t just about marks.

        4. As for PBL, it is still pretty early and I’m still trying to grasp it too lol. Today was actually the first day we actually applied PBL in F03. It might seem a bit slow at first but I really think it’s going to be a helpful tool for problem solving later on. Mac really sets you up great in first year with the way they structure the program and classes in general. So basically with PBL you get a case scenario and then you use the PBL/PBL process to work through it. There’s lots of readings online!

        5. Honestly don’t even stress about CASPER, it’s not as bad as everyone says/thinks. Lots of people “prepare” for it but I don’t think you need to. It’s all about ethics and who you are as a person, so you can’t really prep for it. The only suggestion I would have is working on your typing skills because you need to be fast. I’m a relatively fast typer and I even found myself being cut off by the time limit for a few questions. You’ll get question prompts and then also videos where you’ll watch a scenario and then ask a series of questions. It’s not bad at all 🙂 Just pick one of the earlier dates to get it over with and it’ll all be okay.

        I hope this helps! If you have any other questions I’m happy to answer them. About high school, the university application process and ofc Mac.

    • Hi! What do you think is the lowest average that someone can get in order to get into mac? It’s really my dream school (I actually visited today and fell even more in love) and I’m really hoping that I get in but I’m just really anxious 🙁 Also are you in the main or momac site? and do you know if MoMac students can stay in the Mac campus for rez?

  5. Hey everyone! I am planning on applying to Ryerson main site, GBC- Ryerson collab, Centennial- Ryerson Collab, Durham-Ontario Tech collab, York-Seneca Collab, and Humber College. Currently, I have finished an elective for nursing in summer school and got a 95. I’m trying my best to keep my average around 90 I currently am doing really good in Data Management, Health Sciences, tryna bring my mark up for Chem (stuck at 83%), then I’ll try to bring my mark up in Nutrition and Health (which is at around 82%). Next semester seems a bit stressful for me, I have English (im usually bad at english, plus im getting a teacher who’s a hard marker). Next I have advanced functions (the teacher I’m getting will screw my ass, ngl. Fun Fact: this current semester, she’s teaching a AF class, and they’re average is around 52 and the class is filled with nerds, the highest is at a 82% (one guy has 95+ in everything, but this course, he has a 58). So, I’m debating whether or not I need to take advanced functions or not. Then i have biology…. long story short, I’m hella scared; I have no clue, how I am gonna perform in that course..

    If y’all have any suggestions or tips, please lemme know. I’ll appreciate it!

  6. Hey guys!! Currently a Grade 12 student taking looking to apply to nursing programs at McMaster, Mohawk-Mac collab, Western, Queens, Ryerson, York-Seneca, Ottawa, and Trent! This semester I have AP English lit, chemistry, advanced functions, and data management (I know it’s a tough semester haha). Next semester is bio, French, business leadership, and kinesiology. Right now my top choice is Mac but I’m definitely looking into other options, with Western and Queens in mind as well. Hoping to achieve a low- to mid-90 average this year! Any advice regarding courses, application, CASPer, etc. would be greatly appreciated 🙂

    • 1
    • Hey! I’m currently in first year at Mac 🙂 For courses, I definitely recommend taking kinesiology, it will really help you with anatomy, so its good you’re signed up for that course. I took courses easier elective courses like Human Growth and Development and Families in Canada so those were definitely a mark booster and were very interesting and helpful. My advice with CASPer is to simply relax and not stress too much over it because I know a lot of people do. There’s not much you can do to prepare for it, just practice your typing skills as you do have a time limit. There’s no right answer it’s just about how you yourself would respond/react to a situation. Hope this helps 🙂

  7. Hi, I have an average of about 86% for the requirements for nursing school, what school do I have a chance of getting into ?

  8. Hey! I’m in first year nursing at Queen’s. If anyone has any questions just let me know!

    • 1
    • Hey! So I a have a couple questions:
      1. If you are comfortable sharing, what was your grade 12 average (top 6)
      2. What schools did you apply to / get accepted to
      3. At a university fair one of the Queen’s representatives for the nursing program said it is possible to get in with an 85-89% avg with a strong PSE, is this actually possible?
      Thanks!

      • 1
      • 1. My grade 12 average was a 91%.
        2. I applied to Queens, Brock, Western, Fanshawe-Western collab, McMaster, Nipissing, and uOttawa. I got into Brock, Western, Fanshawe-Western collab, Nipissing and Queens, however I did not get into McMaster and uOttawa. I heard somewhere (this may not be true) that uOttawa sent out their early acceptances and almost everyone who got one accepted their offers. My marks in grade 11 were not up to standard at all. For McMaster, I’ve heard their nursing program is probably one of the most competitive, and you also have to complete the Casper test for acceptance.
        3. Yes, I feel like if your PSE is extremely strong then lower marks may be accepted. I would say the cutoff for this is probably around 88% though, I wouldn’t say as low as an 85. I heard this past year was the most applicants to Queens nursing ever. Queens Nursing program is very small and tight knit, as there are usually only around 92 students accepted, compared to Mac and Western which is around 120. I heard Brock accepts a very small group as well, I think around 80-85 actually.

  9. -What schools are you thinking of applying to/ have been accepted to:
    I’m applying to Mac and MoMac! they are both my top choices I really want to go to mac ): I’m also applying to trent, western, western-fanshawe, and laurentian! My backup is social science @ mac

    -Anticipated average:
    My anticipated average is hopefully a 87-90. I have Kin, Data and Bio this semester. Next semester I have social justice, chem and foods. I took english in the summer and finished with a 91! I may take night school next semester if my Bio mark is lower than expected.

  10. Hi, I’m planning on applying to Ryerson’s nursing program as well as their collab program with George brown and Centennial. I know that I have to apply through OUAC for Ryerson, but for the collab programs is it okay if I apply through Ontario colleges or does it have to be through OUAC?

  11. Hi, I’m planning on applying to Mcmaster’s collaborative program with Mohawk College and was wondering if anyone knows anything about living on residence there and can explain a bit more about this program versus the Mcmaster main campus site.
    Thanks.

  12. Hey, I’m a 105D applicant and I want to know what are my chances of getting into nursing school. I applied to UOIT, Humber, Centennial-Ryerson, GBC-Ryerson for a Bscn. Right now I’m attending a pre-health college university stream program to prepare me for nursing school. My average is an 88 between my 6 courses with electives and and 86 between my core courses (math, English, bio, chemistry). Also I’m really interested in finding out more about Humber colleges nursing program. I can’t really seem to find any information about how the program is, and what the admissions/cut-off averages generally are?

    • 1
  13. I’m in 1st year gbc-rye collab, I applied to only the Ryerson collabs and York collab, I had a 93 average and got into all of them except Ryerson main site. However George Brown is still amazing and I love it. Good luck guys!!

  14. Hey all! I only applied to Western nursing for both campuses! (Also business at Western which I’ve already been accepted to). My expected average is about a 93% with
    Data – 96%
    Chemistry – 95%
    Physics – 93%
    English – 82% (I know my average is low but I have both maths next semester so it will raise!)
    Fingers crossed for everyone to get into their top programs! Good Luck 🙂

  15. Hey everyone! I applied to Western nursing (western site) as well as Queen’s nursing and have received offers from both! I heard back from queens in mid-late December 2019 and heard back from western this morning!
    My grade 12 average (as of right now – my school is semestered) is a 96.8 and my grade 11 was a 95.4%
    Queens only had access to the following marks when they accepted me: (i never planned on writing a PSE)
    Functions (grade 11) – 91
    Advanced functions (grade 12) – 98
    gr. 11 english – 96
    gr. 11 bio – 99
    gr. 11 chem – 97
    psychology, anthroppology and sociology – 93
    hopsitality and tourism – 97
    healthcare – 95
    ~~~~~ western accepted me with those marks as well as:
    gr 12. chem – 94
    gr 12 bio – 97
    families in canada – 97
    I did the casper in November. Wishing the best of luck to you all! Feel free to ask me any questions!
  16. Hey everyone! I applied to the Ryerson nursing collab sites and I’m starting to get really nervous that I won’t get in. I only applied to Ryerson because I have to stay at home for university for personal reasons so Ryerson was really the only option. I am at a private school which means that I am taking all my courses throughout the year and not some each semester. My mid-term marks are… bio – 80 chem – 84 english – 84 kin – 97 writers craft – 97 and I already finished advanced functions over the summer with an 85. My average that I just sent to OUAC is an 88%. What do you think my chances are for getting in at the george brown or centennial site. Thank you!
  17. 105d applicant and as of this morning Ryerson’s portal says I have conditional offers for both GB and Centennial collabs. So excited! Can’t wait until the actual letter comes through and I can accept.
    • 1
    • Congrats! I’m also a 105d applicant, if you’d like to share, what was your basis of admission? I’ve done some college and university and am currently taking 12 U courses in hopes to get a conditional offer soon.
      • 1
      • I applied with the midterm point for the prerequisites and I suspect most of the decision was just based on that. Other than that I did a little bit of post-secondary (1 semester at one program years ago where I made academic mistakes, and a more recent continuing education certificate where my grades were great but seem less important). I did work hard on my supplementary explaining my goals and previous mishaps so perhaps that helped too?
        I hope you get your offer soon! Are you wanting to go to one of the Ryerson collabs?
        • 1
        • Oh right on, glad to hear they’re considering people with midterm marks in the prereqs. Long story, disregard if you’re not into my post night shift ramble lol.
          I unfortunately am more behind than I wanted to be. I have a final mark in data management of 96, but the chem, bio and english are in progress and not at the midterm point yet (but should be with 2 of them soon).
          Sounds like we have similar paths, I took a few programs at mohawk (general arts and science, prehealth (and did well except on an elective which was my fault, go figure) and then finished law and security in 2010. Then took some time off, and here I am full circle haha. I then went to ryerson in 2018 and took 4 courses (to meet the requirements for mac/momac).. I got into a couple of my lower choices, waitlisted from some, given alternate programs from some also, and rejected from mac.. they said I met the requirements but I wasn’t competitive enough basically.. according to mac nursing admissions, they only have 10 seats for 105d applicants. Last cycle, my gpa was decent just not in the 90s 😬
          Anyways, I did spend some time on my supplementary, so hopefully that will tip the scales for me! Just trying to power through the rest of the prereqs. Also hoping that I didn’t screw myself with not taking one of the 2 offers I got last year, but i figured worst case hopefully those schools will admit me this year since I have more completed now. I cast a wide net, and just want to get started basically, so I’ll go where ever I get in tbh. I’m hoping for one of the ryerson sites, brock or momac. But we shall see!
          Tl;dr I screwed up also, have a college diploma and some undergraduate level courses now and currently working on prereqs. Congrats again! I know how challenging it can be for a mature student, it’s not as clear cut and it’s very competitive! Hope to see
          • 1
          • If you got in last year I am sure you will get in this year! But I am curious as to how you got in last year if you didn’t have the prerequisites? How are you taking the prerequisites? Through ILC?
            It’s very difficult to understand where you stand as a mature student. I couldn’t help but think that the mistake I made years ago was going to hold me back. I also applied to a wide variety (basically all the ones I can get to – I’m not at a point in my life where I can move for school but I will commute a long way) and was willing to take any.
            Where you able to apply with just the enrollments for the prerequisites? I hope you are able to hear back from the schools soon. It’s such torture to be playing the waiting game.
            • 1
  18. Sorry, I meant that I received conditional offers with my enrolment letter. Perhaps they were more inclined because I do have my OSSD, a college diploma, and undergraduate level courses with a decent GPA. I did one through adult day school and I’m taking the rest at the same school but online, you just have to come in for your final exam. So that’s how I’ve applied, but most schools are looking at my college courses and university courses too but not sure if they’re basing admission off of those. And I was sure to apply to schools that did the CASPer test, and some that do not, in case I didn’t fair well.
    Yes exactly! Some schools were considering me as a mature student, some as a college/university transfer, and some with just the high school prerequisites. And that’s understandable about not being in a position to move, at least there are a fair amount of schools in the GTA.
    ANd thanks again! It’s so stressful but it’ll pay off I’m sure. It’s great that you can rest easy now. Do you know what school you’re accepting?
    • 1
  19. Anyone get any further responses? I’ve only gotten a conditional offer from Seneca/York. Still waiting to hear back from Centennial/GB + Ryerson, as well as Humber.
    Most likely going to take Seneca/York as it’s so close to home.
    • 1
  20. Hey guys! I’m a 101 applicant and so far I have been accepted into the ryerson nursing collabs (based off my grade 11 marks) and recently the york collabs. My grade 12 average has dropped a lot and it is now a 83. Do you think I have a chance at being accepted into UOIT.. It’s the school I want to go to but I feel like my average is too low and I’m getting worried.
    • 1
  21. i got a conditional offer to the centennial collab program in february but george brown is my first choice. do u think my odds of getting into george brown are okay with an 88 average?
    • 1
  22. Hey all, I was recently accepted to both Western and Fanshawe sites along with Windsor in mid-February, still waiting for a response from a couple other schools!
    • 1
  23. Hello, I got offers from all 3 Ryerson sites along with UOttawa as well as the Fanshawe Site. Hopefully will be hearing from Mac, Queens, and Western main site soon!
    • 1
  24. Hey Guys! I got into all 4 of the nursing programs I applied for which is UOttawa Main Site, Ryerson Main Site, Ryerson GB and Queens. I honestly was not expecting to get into Queens and Ryerson Main Site so soon after reading so many posts of people with higher averages than me not getting in.
    Here is the break down of my marks:
    I got into UOttawa main from my gr 11 marks which are:
    Bio- 90
    Chem- 92
    Math- 92
    Eng- 87
    History- 90
    Health Care- 92
    Average: 90.5
    I got into Ryerson, Ryerson GB and Queens (and Mac Life Sci/Western Health Sci) from my gr 12 sem one and gr 11 marks which are:
    Gr 12 Advanced Functions- 95
    Gr 12 Chem- 94
    Gr 12 Bio- 90
    Gr 11 Eng- 87
    Gr 11 Health Care- 92
    Gr 11 History- 90
    Average: 91.33
    If I had to be honest, I think I got into Queens with my PSE. I honestly thought my EC was not the greatest. I worked at 2 different part-time jobs at different times. I joined like 3 clubs. I volunteered for 50 hours. In my paragraph, I wrote about how I did a mentorship program/club at my school and how being mentee in grade 9 helped me become a mentor in grade 11/12. I am posting only because before I got into these programs I would constantly check this thread to see who else got accepted, what averages they got and what they wrote for their EC. Good luck to everyone! I can’t wait to see you all in the nursing field!
    • 1
  25. my average is also 91.3 but I haven’t heard back from western health sci. For the average, I know they need English, math and bio. my English and math I did it last em and I know they’ll look at my grade 11 bio. but for the other 3 courses do they look at grade 12 em 1 or my highest from grade 11?
    • 1
  26. I got offered admissions to westerns health sciences on feb 25, and just today I also got offers to both the western and the collab nursing programs.
    • 1
  27. I got accepted into all three Ryerson sites, York/Seneca collab, Queens and UOIT! My average is 93%! I was wondering if anyone has received a conditional offer to McMaster or their Conestoga/Mohawk collaboratives?
    • 1
  28. I got accepted into York Seneca and Ryerson GB in mid Feb. Yesterday I got my offers from Trent and UOIT! My average is a flat 90 with five of my final 12U/M marks out of six and i’m hoping to bring it up to a 90.5-91 with my last elective this sem. I’m still waiting on Mac/MoMac but I heard that they send out offers in May.
    • 1
  29. My UOIT offer shows up on ouac (Got in with an 89.5 first sem) but when i logged on to the uoit portal i cant seem to find the offer. Does anybody know how to access it?
    • 1
  30. So far I got accepted to uOttawa, York Seneca and Brock Loyalist (all in feb). I’m waiting on Mac, Queens, Western and Ryerson collabs. If any one got offers to these programs would you mind sharing your average. Thanks!
    • 1
  31. is it true that ryerson gbc waitlists a lot of people? I am still waiting on my gbc offer and am starting to get antsy aha as many of your probably are. my average is a 88.3. do you think i still have a chance to get in even though it is already april.
    • 1
  32. I applied to Ryerson main site, Queens, Western, Fanshawe and Mac for nursing and have gotten accepted to Ryerson, Queens and Fanshawe.
    Still hoping to get into Western main site. Has anyone heard back from both Western and Fanshawe?
    • 1
  33. Hey! I just received my acceptance for western main site today, i’ve been accepted to queens, ryerson collab programs, york collab programs and trent.
    • 1
  34. Hey guys! I got into Western main site a couple days ago! My first semester average was a 90.3, and it didn’t include chemistry or biology, so I’m assuming they used my grade 11 marks (which were both 87). Making my average from grade 11 and 12 an 89! I also got offers from York and UOIT a couple months ago. Anyone hear from Ottawa main site or Mac yet?
    • 1
  35. Hi guys!!
    I applied to Queens, Western, Nipissing, Brock and Ottawa. I have a 90 average with midterms but my grade 11 marks weren’t great. So far I only have an alternative offer for Medical Science from Brock, but still haven’t heard back from any other programs. Was wondering what my chances are of getting into one of these nursing programs and what averages people have been accepted to Queens Nursing with.
    Thanks for the help, and good luck to everyone!!
    • 1
  36. HEY! I applied to Mcmaster, Macmaster collab w mohawk and Brock. My average from midterms is a 90.8 I feel like i don’t have a chance. People are applying with such high marks lol!!! Good luck everyone 😉
    • 1
  37. I just got in to the fanshawe site a couple days ago but I also applied to the western site. My average at midterms will be around 87 or 88, is that enough for main site?
    • 1
  38. Anyone accept western main site nursing yet???? I accepted yesterday even though I haven’t heard back from mac as I feel like it’s a better program for me and Ik a lot of people who already go there and they say their student life is fantastic!
    • 1
  39. Does anyone know what average you need to get into the Mohawk Mcmaster Collab program?
    • 1
  40. hey guys 🙂 I applied to mac (main, momac, and conestoga), western (main + fanshawe), ryerson (main + gb collab), Ottawa (main), and trent
    —-Overall my top 6 is a 93 (including midterm marks)—-
    Hoping for the best. Also, I think last year ryerson main + western main had a cut off of around 92%. Not sure about mac. Does anyone know?
    • 1
  41. Hey! I applied to nursing at Western (main site), Western (fanshawe site), and Mcmaster (main site)! I have gotten in to both programs at Western but I am waiting for Mac as it is my top choice!
    My current average is a 92.3% and I am super nervous I won’t get into Mac. If you go to Mac when did you get accepted? and did anyone who applied to mac get in yet?
    I heard it’s typically May and that they waitlist people with a 92 which makes me nervous!
    • 1
  42. HI guys, ive yet so receive an offer from George brown ryerson and momac/conmac collabs. Has anyone gotten an offer yet? if so, what was your average?
    • 1
  43. hi guys im torn between attending UOIT and humber but i think i will be attending humber for 2020! I’ve heard good things about the placements and especially the profs for the first year, and hopefully that would help my transition from highschool. I was kind of skeptical at first because i wanted to attend a university. But after much thought i realized no matter where you go everyone will end up in the same position, and humber is technically with the University of New Brunswick anyways! :)) If anyone is also attending humber lmk!
    • 1
  44. Mcmaster will probably send out offers sometime this week. Not knowing when is making me anxious lol. Good luck to everybody who is waiting!
    • 4
  45. Does anyone know for the western program if in the fourth year, second semester the course is taken online and that u can do your placement in a place outside of London?
    • 1
  46. Hey, just got accepted to Brock nursing today. Was wondering has anyone been accepted to Queens yet?
    • 1
  47. does anyone know if queens and western are still sending out acceptances?
    • 1
  48. Hey everyone, can anyone speak to brock’s program? As of now I’m deciding between fanshawe and brock (didn’t apply to western main site as I had already applied to so many). From what I’ve heard from people so far, brock is a smaller school and has smaller class sizes, but that western is more research focused (or had more publications maybe). There’s a list on maclean’s, but it looks like it’s focused on research/publications specifically.
    Other things I’m interested in: the student life (like extracurriculars/clubs, etc), student support, the professors, being able to do a semester or time abroad.
    Thanks!
